    OPGW cable is applied on transmission lines of 500kV, 220kV and 110V voltage grade, particularly widely applied on newly-built lines due to factors such as power outage and safety.

    OPGW cable has the following characteristics:

    1.Big span length (normally more than 250m) on a line with voltage higher than 110kV;
    2.Easy for maintenance and easy for line traverse as its mechanical properties can satisfy the big span traverse;
    3.Metal armor as the outer sheathing of OPGW cable, which has no affect to electrolytic corrosion or degradation under a high voltage;
    4.As there must be power outage during construction of OPGW cable, losses will be sustained during the outage; it¡¯s there recommended to use OPGW cable on transmission lines with voltage above 110kV;
    5.In the index of OPGW cable, the bigger the short-circuit current, the more necessary it is to use conductive armor, which will decrease the tensile strength accordingly; but when tensile strength is constant, it is necessary to increase the short-circuit current capacity; only by increasing the cross section of the metal, can it be possible to result in an increase of the diameter and weight of the cable. Thus safety concerning the tower and pole for the line becomes an issue.
